Villagers

In chapter 23, Okonkwo and the other leaders were held captive by the District Commissioner. They were told that they had to collect 200 bags of cowries to be set free, but when the guards heard about them killing the District Commissioner, the bail was raised to 250 bags of cowries, 50 of which would go straight to the District Commissioner. The villagers began to gather this bail, not knowing that 50 bags would go the the District Commissioner. Do you think that they would have changed their minds and not collected the bail if they knew what was going to happen to 50 bags of cowries, like the District Commisioner suggested, or would they still collect the bail.

I feel that they still would collect the bail because they needed their leaders out eventually. But, I also don't think that this knowledge would have made them wait longer. It would have made them angry, but I don't feel it would have delayed their response time.

I think that the villagers would have still collected the cowries because they were told to do so. The villagers would probably have to collect the bail eventually, and they would probably have just wanted to do it now rather than later.

Their leaders are the most important people to the village, so they needed them at all cost. Even though 50 of the bags were going straight to the District Commissioner, they would still collect them at all cost and get their leaders back.

I think that the villagers would have still collected the cowries because the most important thing is the village leaders. The villagers are probably smart enough to figure out that the village will fall apart without the village leaders. If it was someone eles such as someone with no titles, then the probably would have too much pride to give up 50 cowries to the district commissioner.

i would think that they would still collect the bail money for Okonkwo and the other leaders. The villagers would probably want their leaders back safely and not killed by a bunch of strangers. The villagers may become angry with the acknowledgement of the extra cowries, but if it means that the leaders are going to be safe then they would be fine with it.

I agree. I think that they still would have collected the bail because they were told to. Part of their culture is to listen to their leaders and if that means that they are to collect the bail, they will collect the bail.
