Nwoye's conversion

What do you think was a main factor in Nwoye's conversion to Christianity? In my opinion, Nwoye was feeling of no sense of belonging to his family, especially to his father, and he felt like a pariah which infuenced him into making the decision to convert to Christianity. His father, though, i think was the main factor of his conversion, because it seemed that no matter what Nwoye did, it would not satisfy his father's expectations. What is your opinion on this?

I think the main factor of why Nwoye wanted to convert to Christianity is because he was interested in learning something new. If it was me, I would be interested, but be very scared of what my father might do if he found out! Also, I agree with you guys, his father did make him feel worthless, so he thought if he tried something new, he might be proud of him.

I agree with Monica's response as well your responses. I think that Nwoye wanted to convert to try something new while hoping that would make his father proud. At the same time though I think that Okonkwo might have gotten very upset and furious with his son, Nwoye, because he is doing something that is not the status quo and people might not have a good reaction to that. If people think that Nwoye's convertion is unacceptable then Okonkwo would think so too.

I think that the reason why Nwoye converted to Christianity is because he was longing for acceptance among a group of people. Since he couldn’t get that from his father, who he longed for the most, he decided to join a group that would accept him for who he is. If his father paid more attention to him then he probably would not have converted. I agree with Sammy, that Nwoye’s father might be disappointed in him because he does not fit into the status quo.

A big impact on Nwoye's conversion to Christianity was, in my opinion, pretty much what everyone else in this blog said. Nwoye needed somewhere where he wouldn't be beaten and considered a "woman" by his father. The Christian God, who is merciful and gives everlasting life, would seem more appealing than the deities of his village, who required many sacrifices and brought about many deaths within the village.
